Review:
When I heard about this novella, I was so excited about it. Every time I read the books in the Warriors series in all of the arcs, I kept wondering about Ravenpaw and Barley. And finally, here is my chance to find out where they are now. And I knew it would break my heart.
Ravenpaw has such a special place in my heart. I loved him since the very first book. It pained me to see what he went through with having Tigerheart as his mentor and how he felt chased out of ThunderClan. And I'm so glad he managed to find a place where he belonged. And this place came with Barley. When I started to read this novella, I thought: Are they together-together? So I went on the Warriors wikia page; it says under trivia on his page that Victoria Holmes said that "Ravenpaw will never have a mate or kits," but then underneath, it says: "She later stated that she considers Ravenpaw and Barley to be a very committed couple." I found their moments adorable, and I couldn't help but grin so widely.
I loved Ravenpaw's Farewell. It made my heart ache, yes, but it made me feel completely satisfied. I loved the writing: it had such gorgeous descriptions. And most of all, I loved the characters, and I loved the moments with Ravenpaw and Barley. I hope they are reunited.

This book broke my heart. I very nearly rated it five stars, but went with four since the pacing is a little weird, though that's my issue with most of the Warriors novellas.Ravenpaw is shown to still have a love for ThunderClan deep in his heart, and he struggles briefly with his past desire to be a warrior, versus his love for Barley and the life they share together. One of my favorite things about Ravenpaw's Farewell is that the author did not shy away from the implication that Barley and Ravenpaw are in a relationship. In the past, it's been said that they could not outwardly say that there were LGBT relationships in Warriors, due to the books being targeted at children, but the two cats' love for each other is clearly shown in this book and I loved it.
Early in the book, we are told that some mysterious ailment is afflicting Ravenpaw, though it is very minor at the time.
When the opportunity arises for Ravenpaw to help Barley's niece and nephew find SkyClan and become warrior apprentices, he takes it, staying true to his natural-born warrior nature, even though Barley doesn't agree at first. I was so glad to see Ravenpaw get to experience a piece of his former life (view spoiler)[as the last thing he does before his death (hide spoiler)].
(view spoiler)[The end of the book is heartbreaking, but I think Ravenpaw passes away in the way he'd best like to, with his mate by his side, and just after he'd helped some fellow Clan cats. One of the Erins revealed, outside of this book, that Ravenpaw dies of liver cancer, but he dies lying by Barley's side, after he promises him that they will be together in the afterlife. It was the sappiest, yet most heart-wrenching scene I've read in a long time. (hide spoiler)]

Ravenpaw's Farewell contained a few LGBT undertones, which might not be a problem for some of you, but it was for me. I'm going to provide a few instances where this is shown.
On page 23 (page 212 of the paperback version), there was what appeared to be an "innocent" question. They might not have expected readers to catch it, but it was so obvious. Ravenpaw and Barley went to visit Violet, Barley's sister, and this is what her daughter Bella asked.
"Do you and Barley have any kits?"
"Er, no."
Another instance would be one that some people would not consider an undertone would be this one at the end of page 59 (page 248 of the paperback version). The only reason it caught my eye was how feminine Barley was acting towards Ravenpaw, as if he was in love. This, in my opinion, was a very hidden LGBT undertone as only females would act like the way Barley was acting (think of Firestar and Sandstorm as an example):
Ravenpaw let them start eating first. He was conscious of Barley standing very close to him as they watched the young cats tuck in. "I can't believe how well they've settled into living wild," Barley murmured."You've done a great job."
"They've been very brave," Ravenpaw replied. " I'm proud of them."
Barley leaned against him, smelling warm and soft and familiar. "You should be," he whispered.
Skipping forward to a few pages before the end, it was obvious to me that the undertones were there. Why? Well, Bluestar and the other cats Ravenpaw knew came from StarClan to visit him. They tried to give him his warrior name, but he said he didn't want it. When they offered him a place in StarClan, he again decided against it.
"I cannot join you," he mewed softly, "There is someone I need to wait for. I hope there is a place where we can be together, even though he is not a Clan cat."
At the end, it was really obvious to me. Ravenpaw was dying, and Barley was curled next to him. Innocent, right? When Ravenpaw wished he could comfort Barley, he said this:
"I will wait for you. Wherever you are, I will find you."
From what I've read from the older Warrior books, this seems to be romantic. Like, only the males would say this to the females.
There were probably more hidden "gems" in this book, but these were the ones I caught and wanted to mention. I'm rating this book two stars, mainly because of the hidden LGBT undertones, but I gave another star for the story out of mercy. The story would've been great if not for the content I showed you above. I would never have finished it, but I decided to so I could let you all know what was in it. I would recommend that you check out the book first before handing it to a young one, although this all depends on your morals and what you believe.
I'm really sad how far the Erin Hunter pseudonym has gone under. I know exactly which of the seven people part of the pseudonym influenced the LGBT undertones in general, though I won't list any names. Anyways, I used to love this series, but it's going downhill now. I don't think I want to read any books by them that are newer. The original books that started it, including Into the Wild, as well as a few of the series after that will probably be the only ones I'll read now.

November, Ravenpaw's Farewell, by Erin HunterThe story Ravenpaw's Farewell revolves around a young cat named Ravenpaw as the main character and his fellow companion, Barley, who both live in an abandoned farm. One day while exploring the outskirts of human territories, Barley comes across his long-lost sister, Violet. Violet was a new mother of a bundle of kits, two of which find interest in Ravenpaw for his past of being in a wild forest clan which they presumed was full of other cats skilled in fighting and hunting. Ravenpaw finally insists he would tell a few of his clan stories to the two inquisitive kittens and they began growing a want to join a clan and be with the skilled fighters and hunters, even though only one clan remained in their area, Skyclan, which was already very far away. Ravenpaw is encountered in his dreams by his past mate who lives in Starclan (cat heaven) and she tells him the two kits have a destiny to be fulfilled within Skyclan. Throughout the story, Ravenpaw experiences horrible jabbing pains in his stomach, making it apparent he was very ill, but bent on somehow getting those kits to Skyclan.
Ravenpaw's Farewell was mostly a mix of multiple different themes, but i'm set on it being a lesson to never give up on your dreams or to persevere to help others in need. This is because of how Ravenpaw, even though clearly suffering from an unknown sickness, perseveres with Barley to help the kits find the lost clan safely which they would fulfill their destiny in. This was really proven to me when Ravenpaw is encountered by enemies along his journey and protects the kits the best he can without giving up.
...moreAlso, slightly pe Fabulous. I love the relationship between Ravenpaw and Barley, I think almost everyone can agree that it was adorable. That part when Ravenpaw, Riley, and Bella were already on the journey, and Barley came all that way just to apologize, made me cry. I didn't appreciate Skyclan's attitude, though. I had always liked them because they were the most tolerant of the clans and I'm a hippie, but this side to them..eh. I had made my Oc's Skyclan based, but now I regret that slightly.
Also, slightly petty, but I don't care: what was with Leafstar's kits warrior names? Firefern? I know Skyclan is known for their unorthodox names, but really?
Overall, definitely five stars for Barley and Ravenpaw as a bickering (but still sweet) old couple.
"I'm getting old."
"Mouse-brain. I've seen more at least two more leaf-bares than you, and I'm not old!"
Story/Writing: Oh boy, where do I begin with this one? This novella may be less than a hundred pages, but I was hooked from start to finish. I knew it was gonna be a bit of a sad story, since I knew (given the title) that Ravenpaw dies in the end. Still, as has often been the case with this series, actually reading it made it a very emotional experience. It felt personal. It was like I was waiting for an old friend to die, knowing I could do nothing about it. That said, the Erin Hunter team could not have written a better story for one of the series' most beloved characters to go out on. They did such a good job of bringing out so much emotion in such a small amount of pages. They did such a good job giving honor to this character who's arguably as much of a series veteran as Firestar and Graystripe are. There's a sense of nostalgia, acceptance, and hope throughout the story, however bittersweet it all is. And even though we all knew what would happen in the end, I personally still felt the emotional weight of it all. Such a well-written send-off for such a great character.
Characters: I always love the sorts of books that have us say goodbye to one generation while seeing them pave the way for a new one. And here it's done with care and respect. The older characters felt like they had much to pass on to the younger ones, and the younger ones felt like they had much to learn from the older ones. I loved the dignity given to both and how one wasn't better than the other.
Ravenpaw – Man, Ravenpaw, why did you always have to be so loveable – therefore making your passing all the more heartbreaking? At first, I thought the story was gonna be about Ravenpaw helping two lost cats find their way home, but this was far better. He never got to be a warrior, but that didn't mean he couldn't help another cat or two achieve that dream. And despite leaving his life as a Clan cat behind, Ravenpaw has always had a warrior's heart. And he proved that in this story. He proved it by taking Riley and Bella on a long and perilous journey to SkyClan, and then helping SkyClan show the invading kittypets who's boss, knowing all the while that he was dying from liver cancer (even if he couldn't put a name to it). My favorite parts are the flashbacks he has throughout the story, showing how much time has passed and how much has changed. I also like that he chooses to keep the name he's had all his life, and even turns down joining StarClan so he can wait for Barley, who might not live much longer either. And when Ravenpaw does pass, it reminded me of when Gray Wing died at the end of the "Dawn of the Clans" arc. It was very sad, but also very beautiful. While he hasn't featured in this series as much as Firestar and Graystripe, I'm glad the Erin Hunter team gave Ravenpaw the send-off he deserves. He will not be forgotten!
Barley, Riley, and Bella – Geez, reading Barley say goodbye to Ravenpaw was one of the hardest scenes in the series to read. They've been such good friends for such a long time. It felt like Frodo and Sam being separated at the Gray Havens in LOTR. That said, I thought Barley was great in this. Despite disagreeing with Ravenpaw at first, he ultimately wasn't going to let him go alone. He knows his best friend is sick and does everything he can to help, even if he is just staving off the inevitable. But enough with the sad stuff for a little while. What about Riley and Bella? I thought they were fantastic as well! I also thought it was such a great idea to give Bella a ginger coat while Riley has a gray coat! Even if they aren't actually with him, it makes it feel like Ravenpaw is going on this journey with Firestar and Graystripe! But Riley and Bella themselves were very likable and feisty, and I know they'll be great additions to SkyClan!
Various Other Characters – It was great to see Violet again, having been introduced to her in the "Ravenpaw's Path" graphic novel trilogy. It was a little odd to see that she now has kits, given she's likely the same age as her brother Barley (probably ten years old). But still, she loved her children enough to let them go. And I know she'd be proud of them! That all said, it was even greater to see SkyClan again after having been away from them for at least four years (in the timeline)! Leafstar is still the strong and wise leader she's always been, and I was so happy to see her daughter Firefern grown up and a full-fledged warrior, given she was a kit when I last saw her! Silverstream was a great and loving guide for Ravenpaw. And it was touching to see Bluestar, Whitestorm, and Lionheart say a few last words to him as well. I also got excited when Hawkpaw and Pebblepaw were introduced, 'cause I know how important they're gonna be!
Overall: I found this story to be very poignant and touching. This was probably one of the best novellas in the series, and while it was an emotional read, it was worth it. I mean, yeah, it's canon, so I was obligated to read it, but still! If you think you can handle the feels, I highly recommend this.

I knew that the story was called Ravenpaw's Farewell, but my poor heart didn't expect the farewell to be so sad.Ravenpaw while he's not given a lot of time to be presented in most of the warriors books...he's still for certain one of my favorite characters.
So let's start he decides that after he has a dream that leaves him reminiscent over his old life in the clans that he'll look at what is left of the territories that were torn apart in the forest and his thoughts of how things turned out for the clans that left. He eventually finds himself back into the old Thunderclan Camp with his Best Friend Barley. And Barley of course has his own worries of Ravenpaw suddenly getting all nostalgic about his old clan and not to mention Ravenpaw's sudden twinges in his belly.
(Though Ravenpaw is 8 years old, so if he feels nostalgic there's nothing wrong with that.)
They roam out of the old camp and wonder through more of the forest. Then they suddenly get chased by a fierce Kittypet and luckily ran into Violet(Barley's sister). She shows them to her home and allows them to meet her kits. The kits are excited to hear that Ravenpaw was once a warrior and say how they've heard about the warriors and would like to be warriors themselves.
Then Violet chooses to visit Barley and Ravenpaw's barn she brings her kits Reilly and Bella. And the kits sound more enthusiastic about learning to be warriors if they can. And then Silverstream visits Ravenpaw's dream saying that Violet's kits have the potential to be warriors and that they can probably join Skyclan. And when Barley hears of this idea he kind of gets into an argument with Ravenpaw because he's scared he's losing his Best Friend and scared that Ravenpaw will leave him forever.
(In a way I should ship Best Friends sort of friendship for them, but I think there's nothing wrong with some gay shipping here either hehe. c:)
(They're almost like an old gay married couple...which kinda reminds me of my Grandpa's hehe)
So Ravenpaw sets out on his journey with Bella and Reilly to make them warriors for Skyclan. On the way he teaches them hunting techniques, fighting techniques, and some parts of the warrior code that they should remember. But he of course still feels bad about his falling out with Barley. Then of course he realizes that Barley followed them this whole time because he was worried for them as well as Ravenpaw. He especially felt bad about the falling out with Ravenpaw and apologized.
They eventually reach Skyclan territory and encounter some pesky fox-brained kittypets. They have a small tussle with the kittypets, but eventually the kittypets leave. And then Ravenpaw takes Bella and Reilly to where they can only assume is the Skyclan border. They encounter a patrol and ask for Leafstar. They ask Leafstar about allowing Bella and Reilly to be part of their clan, but she declines. Mostly because she believes she has enough warriors that are loyal to Skyclan and was not looking for recruits outside of the clan much anymore.
Also soon after hearing that answer from Leafstar, they later on find out that there are kittypets that have been causing Skyclan much trouble recently.
Then Starclan visits Ravenpaw telling him that these attacks from the kittypets was a perfect opportunity for Bella and Reilly to be taken in by Skyclan. So Ravenpaw visits Leafstar and explains what her clanmates must do to chase away the kittypets for good. She listens to his thoughts on it and sets patrols to mark territory as well as to prepare for a fight to chase the kittypets away. He also goes with Echosong to their version of the Moonstone/Moonpool and he is once again visited by Starclan they tell him that his time is drawing near and he can also in a way tell it's coming soon and he worries for his Best Friend Barley most.
He heads to their version of a Moonstone/Moonpool and he is given a chance to be welcomed to Starclan and given a warrior name but declines. He then helps fight for Skyclan to help drive off the kittypets. They are victorious, but of course Ravenpaw knows his fate is soon drawing to an end. Also Bella and Reilly are welcomed as Skyclan apprentices. And then Ravenpaw says his final goodbye and of course Barley's sadness about Ravenpaw getting ready to die brought me to tears. And it was so saddening to read the dialogue and know that one of my favorite characters had to die. But I'm glad that he can visit Starclan anytime and that he'll continue to watch over Barley till he sees him again.
While this was a tragic novella I was glad that Ravenpaw got proper closure for his story and side of things. It seems that he really matured over time and that he has really enjoyed most of his life, so it made everything leading up to the end of the novella more satisfying for his character.
-Cries tears of joy and Sadness-
Well at least his character is in a better place where his liver can't hurt him anymore. Just like my old cat Fuzzy is in a better place where his kidney can't hurt him.
I recommend this to Warrior fans, People who love Ravenpaw, and analysts who like to view more details in a character or story.
Thanks for reading my review. I hope you enjoyed it.

I've always wanted to hear more about Ravenpaw's life after the Clans. As the title suggests, this book centers around his death and gradual acceptance of his fate. Interactions between Barley and Ravenpaw were heartwarming and I was so glad he was able to have one final warrior mission and a peaceful, dignified warrior's death. I cried like a baby and it was just what I needed. One criticism though: come on, SkyClan! Not all kittypet names make good warrior prefixes. Cherrytail works well. Macgyver's name doesn't even need to be warrior-ified in order to be awesome. Billystorm is really toeing the line. But Bellapaw? Rileypaw? That's just plain derpy.

He then chose to leave his Clan and the forest behind, and settle in the farm passed WindClans old territory. He has lived for many moons happily with his new friend, Barly.
